Sardar Hari Singh, S Birth And Place
Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa was born in Gujranwala, a village in eastern Pakistan (Old Punjab) on 29 April 1791 to Father Gurdayal Singh and Mother Dharam Kaur. Sardar Hari Singh was very fearless and brave since childhood. When he grew Sardar Gurdial Singh Appionted a learned singh and a good fazal maulvi to teach to hari singh Punjabi And Persian Barely seven summers and seven winters of his childhood passed when his father went on a champaign After this Hari singh was brought up in the house of his maternal Uncle Along with his education he also made special arrangements for horse riding and weadponry He Acquired a Good Knowledge of punjabi and persian at on early age and also acquired good skills in horse riding. Hari Singh Nalwa joins Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s army
Maharaja Ranjit Singh used to select young men for his army by observing their aptitude in the open faris held during the diiwali- vasisakhi of the sixth month. this time too as before maharaja was sitting on young men when his turn came a agile young man galloped his horse and entered the field like lighting As per the earlier preparations he dug a firt dug in the ground with his spear and galloped ahead. Everyone applauded him and encouraged him. then he showed amazing feats of swordplay earning a lot of applause . shooting arrows and carrying a mugdar were also part of his hobby . the young man was extremely agile a master of boy in terms of age . maharaj , s called him and congratulated him , gave him a cash reward of two hundred rupees and asked , young man i am very happy with your feats. what is your name ? yes sir ! they cell me hari singh . Hari Singh said to Maharaja Ranjit Singh that you should arrange for me to face one of your famous wrestlers, I want to test my strength for you. The fight took place between the wrestler and Hari Singh. Hari Singh defeated the wrestler in a moment. Seeing Hari Singh’s strength, Ranjit Singh appointed Hari Singh as his personal guard.
Sardar Hari Singh’s battles and becoming a general
One day Maharaja Ranjit Singh went to hunt in the jungle. In the dense jungle, he heard the roar of a lion. From among the bushes, the lion came out. The jungle echoed with the roar. Then Hari Singh came in front of the lion and a fierce fight started between the lion and Hari Singh. Hari Singh never allowed the lion to dominate him. After the fierce fight, Hari Singh caught the jaw of the lion and tore the jaw with his strength and killed the lion. Then Maharaja Ranjit Singh made Hari Singh a general from a guard and from now on Hari Singh will be called Nalwa. according to tha Mahabahat a king had killed a lion and was called nalla on reaching lahore the chief was honoured the loin was shown to the citizens Hari singh started in every household at this time hari singh was only 18 years old . Hari Singh fought and won many battles in his life. Hari Singh defeated the Afghans many times, some of the famous battles are Kasur in 1807, Multan, Mitha Tiwana, Gilani, Attock in 1813, Kashmir in 1818 and many forts. In 1820, the command of Kashmir was handed over to Hari Singh. Hari Singh was a very important general of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
Martyrdom of Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa
In 1837, the wedding of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s grandson was organized in Lahore. To show his power, Maharaja Ranjit called the army of entire Punjab to Lahore. For the wedding, Maharaja invited British Commander in Chief Harry Finn and his friend Dost Khan Muhammad. Hari Singh, knowing the danger, thought it wise to stay in Peshawar. There were only 600 soldiers in the Jamrud fort. The Afghans were aware of it, but Hari Singh had defeated the Afghans so badly that the Afghans did not have the courage to attack. Getting the opportunity, Dost Khan Muhammad surrounded the Jamrud Fort with his 5 sons and army. Hari Singh was going to protect the Jamrud Fort, but Maharaja Ranjit Singh asked him to wait till the Lahore army’s help arrived. There was less army in the Jamrud Fort. Before the help arrived from Lahore, Hari Singh left to protect the Jamrud Fort. A battle took place between Hari Singh and the Afghans near Jamrud Fort. The number of Afghans was 700. Due to being outnumbered, the Afghan army treacherously injured Hari Singh. Despite being injured, Hari Singh entered the fort. Hari Singh told his army that if he dies, this news should not go out of the fort. The Afghans did not get any information for four days, but help came from Lahore and the Afghans could not conquer the fort. Hari Singh was martyred on 30 April 1837 in Jamrud.
